TITHING FOR THE POOR

In Caritas Manila, your TITHING FOR THE POOR will support our our flagship program YSLEP or the Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program  which helps reduce poverty by giving underprivileged youth financial assistance to help them finish college or a voc-tech degree.  Our scholars, whom we call Youth Servant Leaders, undergo leadership trainings, spiritual formations and church and community service opportunities so that they will graduate imbued with self-discipline, moral integrity, and social responsibility. Each year, we target to help 5,000 youths from the poorest provinces nationwide.

As we approach to the nation’s celebration of 500 years of Christianity in 2021, we are challenged to raise the bar of our social commitment as Christians.

We are faithful stewards.  We receive God’s gifts gratefully, cultivate them responsibly, share them lovingly with others, and return them with increase to the Lord.

WHAT IS TITHING?
A tithe is a tenth of one’s income and tithing is the practice of contributing this amount to the support of religious institutions or of the needy.

WHY DO WE TITHE?

  1.   Give back to the Lord in gratitude a portion of everything God has given.  “O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His steadfast love endures forever” Psalm 118:1
  2. Put God First. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
  3. Trust that God will take care of you and all your needs. “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.” 1 Timothy 6:17

HOW DO WE TITHE?
See the tithe as a sacrifice, a donation that seems almost more than affordable, and would entail you to forego of some things or luxuries you enjoy.  Treat your tithe as an offering that “makes holy” all your efforts and earnings.

The word “tithe” originally meant ten percent (10%). It is, however, just a guideline to help determine one’s sacrificial giving. Some can offer more than a 10% tithe; others may have circumstances that warrant them paying less than a 10% tithe. If you are finding it hard to give 10% right now, you may begin with a lower percentage that will be both sacrificial and yet possible. Then you may gradually raise the level of giving until the full tithe is reached.

WHERE DO I TITHE?

“The Christian faithful are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church so that the Church has what is necessary for divine worship, for the works of the apostolate and of charity, and for the decent support of ministers. They are also obliged to promote social justice and, mindful of the precept of the Lord, to assist the poor from their own resources.” (Canon Law 222)

  1. You can tithe to where you nourish your faith – in your parish, religious organization, or charismatic community.

We also tithe to share in the work of the Church of the Poor.
